This route runs mostly through vineyards and passes through a few stretches of forest. It is constantly ascending and descending, but the altitude meters are not too much with it’s 1,310 meters in total. The route runs mostly on small asphalt roads and ends in the cozy town of Remich.
We are early this morning, at 8:00 am we walk off the campsite through the village of Grevenmacher. We walk up the many steps past the church, and pretty soon we are walking among the grape fields. The old vines are freshly sprouted. It will take a while before the grapes are grown, but the farmers are already busy tending the bushes. What a picture: the morning sun on the vines, with the Mosel flowing at the bottom of the valley. The route climbs and descends along the fields and we pass some small towns and stretches of forest.
It is a long hike today, almost 28km, so after 8km we take a small break on a tree trunk in the forest and after 17km we are happy to see a bench with table in a slope, so we can make an extended lunch break. We prepare our favorite lunch; a double whole grain sandwich with cheese and vegetables, plus an egg. We share a Coeur de Boeuf tomato (nomnom!) and let our legs and feet recover from the long stretches of asphalt. When we continue our hike, the sun is shining brightly and it is quite warm. We take the last break at a picnic spot on a hill in the shade of chestnut trees. We drink our last water but that doesn’t matter; there is only 4.5 km to the campsite left.
The last stretch is fairly shady. Over a beautiful boardwalk through the woods, along a meandering stream, we walk into Remich. It turns out to be an unexpectedly bustling town, with a pleasant quay. We briefly cross the bridge over the Mosel to pitch our tent just on the other side in Germany. We do some shopping for tonight and tomorrow; our last stage in Luxembourg already!
